Tyre Checks and the 20p Tyre Test
Here at Wilco Motosave, we know that you understand your car’s tyres have to be in good condition. But we also know that some people leave it longer than they should, driving on unsafe tyres for months – and some people don’t get them checked at all! But making sure your tyres are safe and legal is essential, for your safety and your wallet.
Driving on non-regulation tyres
- Up to £2,500 fine per tyre
- Three penalty points for each illegal tyre
The penalties for non-regulation tread depth might seem high, but it’s a reflection of the increased risk you’re taking with poor tyre condition and the resulting diminished grip. If you want to know what that looks like, a new tyre with 8mm tread has a stopping distance in the wet, of 25.9 metres; at the legal limit of 1.6mm, your stopping distance is 39.5 metres (research by the Motor Industry Research Association). Those precious extra millimetres of tyre tread could be the difference between life and death.

Check your tyre tread depth with the 20p Tyre Test
The current legal minimum for cars, vans and LCVs is 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its entire circumference. To quickly check your tyres, simply place a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of your tyre. If the outer band of the 20p coin is obscured when it is inserted, then your tread is above the legal limit.
If the outer band of the coin is visible, your tyres may be illegal and should be checked by a qualified tyre professional immediately.
NOTE: Remember to check at least three locations around each tyre.
Check your tyre pressure
Pressures should be checked in line with the vehicle manufacturers’ recommended settings. Take care to increase the pressure if the vehicle is heavily loaded as shown in the car maker’s recommendations. If you’re unsure we can advise you.
Check the condition
Give your tyres a thorough visual inspection to look for any cuts, lumps or bulges. Also, remove any objects embedded in the tread. Unsure if you’ve spotted anything serious? At Wilco Motosave, we offer a free visual tyre inspection.
Check your wheel alignment
Poor wheel alignment can mean that your tyres wear down quicker, so getting them properly aligned means they can last longer and can improve your cars handling. If you’re worried that your wheels may not be properly aligned, visit us for a free, no-obligation alignment check.
It’s quick and easy to make sure your tyres are safe. Not only could it save you £2,500 and 3 Penalty points, but it could save your life.
